Most Revd John Satterthwaite RIP
With sadness it was announced that Bishop John Satterthwaite passed away peacefully on 23 April 2016, in Port Macquarie.
Bishop John was born in Sydney on 11 August 1928, and ordained in Rome by Archbishop Luigi Traglia for the Diocese of Armidale on 16 March 1957. There he served in various parishes, including as Administrator of the Cathedral and as secretary to Bishop Edward Doody.
On 6 May 1969 Pope Paul VI named Father Satterthwaite Coadjutor Bishop of Lismore, assigning him to the titular See of Tjgnica in Tunisia. He was ordained bishop in St Carthage's Cathedral, Lismore, by Cardinal Gilroy on 1 May 1969, and succeeded as Fourth Bishop on the death of Bishop Patrick Farrelly on 1 September 1971.
At thirty years in office, Bishop John's episcopate was a comparatively long one, as were those of his two immediate predecessors. In 2000 his request for a Coadjutor Bishop was granted by Pope St John Paul II, and his retirement took effect on 1 December 2001.
Bishop John retired to Port Macquarie and in the years since was active in the assistance he gave by his presence and his ministry in St Agnes' Parish.
Bishop John will be remembered in the prayers and Masses of the great number of people upon whose lives he was a welcome and loved influence during his years in office and more recently in retirement.
Many of the faithful came to attend Bishop John's Requiem Mass which took place on Monday 2 May at 10.30am in the Cathedral. Students from the Catholic schools of the diocese formed a guard of honour at the conclusion of the Requiem for the cortege which carried his mortal remains to the East Lismore cemetery where he was laid to rest.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
