The Sacrament of Baptism

For the Baptism of adults, see our page on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).  What follows concerns the baptism of infants and very young children.

Baptism of Children

Baptisms are celebrated in the Cathedral following the 9.00am Mass on the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Sundays of the month.

A programme of preparation is provided on the first Sunday of the month after the 9.00am Mass. This is conducted in the Parish Meeting Centre (next to the Cathedral).  It is essential that at least one parent - and preferably both -  attend this preparation prior to the day of Baptism.
School aged children for Baptism need to attend a program of lessons in preparation for Baptism. This program is run in March and October in the Parish Centre.                                 Please contact the parish office for more information.
The family presenting a child for Baptism is asked to attend the 9.00am Mass on the day of Baptism so that the introduction part of the ceremony may take place at the beginning of Mass in the presence of a large section of the parish community. The ceremony of Baptism continues after the Mass.

If a family from outside the parish requests Baptism at the cathedral they must have the permission of their parish priest. In this case Baptismal preparation may be undertaken in their own parish.

Bookings for Baptisms are made through the parish office. (6621 0200).  At least one month’s notice is required so that the parents can attend the monthly preparation.

Baptisms at Terania Parish usually take place during the Masses at Dunoon or Goolmangar. The procedure for arranging a Baptism and preparation is as above
